Innovation Projects for the food industry.

Did you know that …

  • Food security is a national crisis. The South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that, in urban areas, 28% of households were at risk of hunger while 26% were already experiencing hunger. In rural communities these statistics hit 32% and 36% respectively.
  • South Africa faces an impending food security crisis if there isn’t urgent action to correct unsustainable practices, says environmental organisation World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). According to the WWF, South Africa will have to produce 50% more food by 2050 to feed an estimated population of 73 million people.
  • Even though processed food has a bad reputation (nutritionally bankrupt, and loaded with sugar, fat and salt), it doesn’t have to be unhealthy. As populations increase and the effects of climate change begin to take hold, we will face shortages in food, so it’s important to realise this and investigate how to use processed food to address this.

Our philosophy is that processing already scarce food resources, is the only way to create food security for our future. Processed foods must be healthy, safe, nutritious and delicious.

assist with ensuring responsible production of good processed foods for a sustainable future.

What is innovation …

  • Innovation is truly a confusing buzzword which many people love to hate. Every business leader agrees that it is important. But nobody can quite seem to agree on what it actually is or what it means.

Innovation in the food industry …

Innovation in the food industry combines technological innovation with social and cultural innovation. It occurs throughout the entire food system, including production, harvesting, primary and secondary processing, manufacturing and distribution. The ultimate innovation is a new or improved consumer product and service. Innovations can be focused in one area of food technology, for example process engineering, product formulation, food qualities or consumer needs; but ripples spread causing changes in other parts of the food system, in consumer eating patterns and in general social and cultural areas.

Food innovation is the process of making a product new or better. It is can also be the process of doing some service or action in a new way. In business, innovation also has to include the concept of improvement. To innovate in business is not just to do something differently, but to do or make something better.

Our philosophy is - food innovation should improve existing technologies, processes and designs, increase manufacturing efficiency and ensure that new customers are reached. It should lead to the development of new products that will enable processing facilities to stay relevant, comply to social expectation and operate ahead of the curve. Food innovation should ultimately create consumer value and increase manufacturing profit.
